Emelie Schulze’s work Prism 1.0 is a collection of photographs and mirrors coming together to create a collage in a 3-dimensional space. Stemming from the feelings of loneliness and uncertainty she goes through an intuitive process of manipulating and then piecing together new and archival recollections and fragments of the home and its surroundings on mirrors.

Schulze is hereby questioning the ideology that the home is a place of comfort and safety. Primarily, she tried to use the reflection of the mirrors to find herself again within the context of the home – trying to invade the photograph herself.

Yet, through the process of installing her work this developed into an interactive process with the audience. They are invited to step into the work and each viewer’s interaction is different, made up of images, reflections and shadows constantly changing in response to the viewer’s movements.

Taking influence from artists such as Dafna Talmor – who works with the collaging of colour negatives to create imaginary places and Sarah Howe’s installation work which constructs an immersive environment. Ultimately, Prism 1.0 asks if the home is a physical space and allows the viewer to project the answer based upon their own experiences and prejudices.
